A plague doctor was a medical physician who treated victims of the bubonic plague in the 17th-19th centuries. Some wore a beak-like mask with glass eye openings and filled with aromatic items, such as herbs, straw, and spices. The masks were designed to protect them from putrid air, which was seen as the cause of infection. They also wore a light, waxed fabric overcoat and carry a cane to examine and direct patients without the need to make direct contact with the patient.
